Ini complete guide dari starting price ke final price.
Understanding Bali Pricing
The 4-Tier System:
Tier 1: Displayed Price (Tourist Price)
- What tag says
- 500-1000% markup
- Nobody pays this
Tier 2: First Offer (Nego Start)
- After you ask "berapa?"
- 200-400% markup
- Still way overpriced
Tier 3: Local Friend Price
- After negotiation
- 100-150% markup
- Acceptable
Tier 4: Local Price (Hidden)
- What locals actually pay
- 20-50% markup (reasonable profit)
- Hard to get tapi possible
Example:
Silver bracelet:
- Tag: Rp1,5 juta (Tier 1)
- First offer: Rp1 juta (Tier 2)
- After nego: Rp400rb (Tier 3)
- Local price: Rp200rb (Tier 4)
Goal: Get Tier 3-4 price.
Rule #1: NEVER Pay First Price
The Fundamental Law:
First price = 5-10x real price
If you pay asking price:
- Seller thinks you stupid
- You overpay 500-900%
- Other tourist prices go up (you ruin market)
Always negotiate. No exceptions.
The Script (Step-by-Step)
Phase 1: Interest Without Commitment
You: Pick up item, examine casually
DON'T SAY: "I love this! How much?"
DO SAY: "Berapa ini?" casual tone
Why: Showing too much interest = price goes up
Seller: "Untuk Anda, special price Rp800rb"
You: No reaction. Continue examining.
Phase 2: The Anchor
You: "Terlalu mahal. Rp150rb saja."
Key points:
- Start 20-25% of their price
- Serious tone
- Don't smile (yet)
Seller: "Wah tidak bisa! Cost saya Rp600rb! Rugi saya!"
Translation: All lies. Ignore.
You: Put item down, start walking
Phase 3: The Callback (Usually Happens)
Seller: "Eh tunggu! Berapa Anda mau bayar?"
You return: "Maksimal Rp200rb. Itu saja."
Seller: "Rp500rb lah, harga teman"
You: "Rp200rb final." Pull out exact cash
Showing cash = powerful
Phase 4: The Close
Seller: "Rp350rb, saya kasih"
You: "Rp220rb, saya beli 2 pieces"
Bulk buying = leverage
Seller: Calculating "Ok lah, Rp250rb each"
You: "Deal. Rp500rb untuk 2."
Handshake. Done.
Result:
- Started: Rp800rb each
- Ended: Rp250rb each (69% discount)
- Bought 2: Total Rp500rb vs Rp1,6 juta
Saved: Rp1,1 juta (69%)
Advanced Techniques
Technique 1: The Walk Away
Most powerful weapon.
How:
- Nego to your price
- Seller refuses
- Say "terima kasih" politely
- Walk away (don't look back)
Success rate: 70%
Seller will:
- Call you back (70% of time)
- Accept your price or very close
- Respect you more
If they don't call:
- Your price too low (rare)
- Or they have better offers (accept it)
Technique 2: The Comparison
Script:
"Toko sebelah jual Rp300rb. Kenapa sini Rp800rb?"
Even if not true (tapi don't be too obvious).
Creates price pressure.
Seller will match or beat "competitor".
Technique 3: The Bulk Buy
Script:
"Kalau saya beli 5, berapa each?"
Bulk discount = guaranteed.
Typical:
- 2 pieces: 10% off
- 3-5 pieces: 20% off
- 5+ pieces: 30% off
Combine dengan negotiation = 70-80% total off
Technique 4: The End of Day
Shop between 5-7pm.
Why:
- Seller want to make sales before close
- More willing to discount
- Less customer = more desperate
I've gotten 90% off shopping at 6:30pm.
Technique 5: The Cash Flash
Pull out exact cash:
"Ini Rp200rb. Saya bayar sekarang. Deal?"
Cash in hand = psychological trigger
Seller sees money, wants money, accepts.
Technique 6: The Defect Point
Find tiny defect:
"Ada scratch kecil disini. Rp150rb saja."
Even tiny issue = discount leverage.
Technique 7: The Local Friend
Bring Indonesian friend (or pretend call):
"Teman saya orang Bali, dia bilang harga normal Rp200rb"
Seller knows can't scam if you have local.
Technique 8: The Bahasa Indonesia
Learn basic phrases:
- "Terlalu mahal" (too expensive)
- "Harga lokal berapa?" (what's local price?)
- "Terakhir" (final offer)
- "Tidak bisa lebih?" (can't go lower?)
Speaking Bahasa = instant respect + better price
Category-Specific Guides
Silver Jewelry:
Typical markup: 500-800%
Strategy:
- Check silver stamp (925 = real)
- Weigh (silver has weight)
- Know silver price: ~Rp15rb/gram
- Offer: Weight × Rp20rb + Rp50rb labor
Example:
- Bracelet 10 gram
- Offer: 10g × Rp20rb + Rp50rb = Rp250rb
- Asking price: Rp1,2 juta
- Your offer: Rp200-250rb
- Final: Rp300-400rb (reasonable)
Clothing:
Typical markup: 300-500%
Strategy:
- Check stitching quality
- Look for defects
- Try on (find fit issues)
- Use defect as leverage
Script:
"Dress ini stitching agak kurang disini. Rp100rb saja."
Asking: Rp500rb
Your offer: Rp80-100rb
Final: Rp150-200rb
Wood Carvings:
Typical markup: 600-1000%
Strategy:
- Point out "same as market" (true)
- Mass produced (also true)
- Offer 10-15% of asking
Asking: Rp2 juta
Your offer: Rp200-300rb
Final: Rp400-600rb
All wood carvings basically same (from same village/factory).
Paintings:
Huge range:
Mass produced: Markup 500%+
- Offer 10-20% asking
- Final: 30-40% asking
Actual artist: More reasonable
- Check signature
- Ask about technique
- Offer 40-50% asking
- Final: 60-70% asking
How to tell:
- Same painting = mass produced
- Unique = potentially real artist
- Gallery setting = higher price (but sometimes real)
Location-Specific Tips
Ubud Market:
Markup: 500-800%
Strategy: Very aggressive nego
Starting offer: 15-20% of asking
Success rate: High
Tips:
- Most crowded = most tourist trap
- Back stalls = better price
- Morning = less desperate, evening = more discount
Kuta/Seminyak Boutiques:
Markup: 300-500%
Strategy: Walk away powerful here
Starting offer: 30-40% asking
Success rate: Moderate
They pretend "fixed price" but always negotiable.
Sukawati Market:
Markup: 400-600%
Strategy: Bulk buy works best
Starting offer: 20-30% asking
Success rate: Very high
Wholesale market = designed for negotiation
Seminyak "Designer" Shops:
Markup: 200-400%
Strategy: Subtle nego (not aggressive)
Starting offer: 50-60% asking
Success rate: Moderate
More upscale = less nego room (but still possible)
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Mistake 1: Showing Too Much Interest
Tourist: "OMG I love this!"
Result: Price instantly +50%
Better: Cool, casual examination
Mistake 2: First Day Shopping
Don't buy first day.
Why:
- Don't know prices yet
- Will see same items everywhere
- Panic buy at high price
Better: Browse day 1, buy day 3-4 after research
Mistake 3: Shopping in Groups
Large group = higher prices
Why:
- Look wealthy
- Social pressure to buy
- Harder to walk away
Better: Shop solo or with 1 person max
Mistake 4: Not Walking Away
You negotiate but accept their counter = weak position
Must walk away at least once.
This signals serious buyer, not desperate tourist.
Mistake 5: Paying in USD
USD = tourist = higher price
Always pay Rupiah = local = better price
Mistake 6: Shopping Near Hotels
Hotel area = 2x tourist price
Walk 15 minutes away = normal price
Mistake 7: Buying From Guys on Beach
Beach sellers = 1000% markup
Never buy from beach.
Same item at market = 10x cheaper
Real Examples From My Students
Example 1: Sarah (First Timer)
Item: Handmade bag
Asking: Rp600rb
Her offer: Rp100rb (following script)
Walk away: Yes
Called back: Yes
Final: Rp150rb (75% off)
She was nervous but followed script = success
Example 2: Mike (Confident)
Item: 5 sarongs
Asking: Rp200rb each = Rp1 juta
His offer: Rp50rb each = Rp250rb total
Bulk discount: Offered Rp500rb
His counter: Rp300rb final
Final: Rp350rb for 5 (Rp70rb each = 65% off)
Example 3: Linda (Pro Level)
Item: Silver necklace
Asking: Rp1,5 juta
Her offer: Rp200rb
Walk away: Yes
Call back: "Rp800rb minimum"
Walk again: Yes
Follow to street: Yes
Final: Rp250rb (83% off!)
She walked away TWICE = power move
Cultural Respect While Negotiating
Do's:
✅ Be polite but firm
✅ Smile after deal done
✅ Thank seller sincerely
✅ Honor your offer (don't back out)
✅ Respect if they truly can't go lower
Don'ts:
❌ Be rude/aggressive
❌ Insult quality
❌ Laugh at their price
❌ Make scene
❌ Negotiate then not buy
Negotiation is game. Everyone knows rules. Keep it friendly.
The Ethics Question
"Is It Fair to Negotiate So Hard?"
Yes, because:
1. Markup is 500-1000%
- Starting price exploitative
- Your "discount" still profit for them
- You're just refusing to be scammed
2. They Expect It
- Built into system
- No hard feelings
- Part of transaction
3. You're Not Hurting Locals
- Cost: Rp50rb
- Your price: Rp200rb
- Their profit: Rp150rb (300% margin!)
- Still very profitable
4. Alternative
- Pay Rp1 juta
- Seller makes Rp950rb (1800% profit)
- Encourages scamming
Fair price = item cost × 2-3
Your negotiation = getting closer to fair

Best nego:
- Asking: Rp2,5 juta (wood carving)
