15 tahun sebagai driver di Bali. Income average Rp750 juta/tahun.

Bukan dari rate transport.

Dari:

• Overcharge tourist 300-500%
• Kickback dari restoran, spa, shop
• "Tour package" yang 80% komisi
• "Helping" tourist yang actually ripping them off

Guilt akhirnya menang.

Scam #1: Airport Pickup Overcharge Ekstrim

Real Price vs Tourist Price:

Ngurah Rai Airport → Seminyak (15km):

• Taxi meter resmi: Rp100-120rb
• Grab/Gojek: Rp60-75rb
• Kami charge tourist: Rp400-600rb
• Markup: 500-800%

Airport → Ubud (35km):

• Taxi meter: Rp250-300rb
• Grab: Rp150-180rb
• Kami charge: Rp800rb-1,2 juta
• Markup: 400-667%

Airport → Uluwatu (18km):

• Taxi meter: Rp120-150rb
• Grab: Rp75-90rb
• Kami charge: Rp500-700rb
• Markup: 556-778%

How We Get Away With It:

1. Approach saat tourist keluar arrival
2. "Official airport taxi" claim (we're not)
3. "Fixed price, no meter" pitch (sounds convenient)
4. Tourist tired, want convenience (prime target)
5. Cash only (no receipt, no proof)

Red Flags:

• Approach you inside/outside airport (not from official counter)
• "No meter, fixed price"
• Price way above Rp200rb for any destination
• Cash only
• Aggressive pushy behavior
• "Grab not allowed here" (lie)

Scam #2: Day Tour "Package" 80% Komisi

Standard Day Tour:

Kami Charge: Rp800rb/day (10 jam)
Breakdown Real:

• Bensin: Rp100rb
• Car depreciation: Rp50rb
• Time: Rp150rb (reasonable wage)
• Actual cost to us: Rp300rb

So far, 167% markup - reasonable.

BUT here's the real profit:

Kickback dari Setiap Stop:

Coffee plantation:

• Entry free untuk tourist
• We get: Rp50rb per tourist
• Kalau tourist beli coffee (Rp300rb): We get Rp100rb extra

Silver shop:

• Tourist beli jewelry Rp3 juta
• We get: Rp600rb (20% komisi)

Wood carving shop:

• Tourist beli Rp2 juta
• We get: Rp500rb (25% komisi)

Restaurant lunch:

• Tourist bayar Rp400rb (overpriced)
• We get: Rp80rb (20% komisi)

Temple "donation":

• We "help" tourist dengan sarong, donation
• Actually we're facilitator getting cut
• We get: Rp30rb per tourist

Total kickback dari 2 tourist day tour: Rp1,36 juta
Plus our Rp800rb fee: Rp2,16 juta

For 10 hours work.

Real cost to us: Rp300rb
Total profit: Rp1,86 juta (620% margin)

Scam #3: "Cheaper" Private Driver yang Jadi Mahal

The Pitch:

"Rp500rb/day private driver - cheaper than tour!"

Sounds good.

The Reality:

Day 1:

• "Let's go to this AMAZING coffee plantation" (Rp50rb kickback for me)
• "Best silver shop in Bali" (20% komisi)
• "Authentic restaurant locals love" (overpriced, Rp100rb komisi)

Day 2:

• "Your wife will LOVE this spa" (25% komisi dari treatment Rp2 juta)
• "Best place for souvenirs" (25% komisi)

End of 3 days:

• Tourist spent: Rp15 juta on shopping, spa, meals
• My kickback: Rp3,5 juta
• My driver fee: Rp1,5 juta
• Total my profit: Rp5 juta

Tourist thinks: "Saved money dengan private driver!"
Reality: Spent 3x more karena my recommendations

Scam #4: Meter "Broken" Taxi

Classic Move:

Tourist: "Meter please"
Driver: "Meter broken today. Fixed price Rp400rb ok?"

Reality:

• Meter not broken
• Meter price would be Rp100rb
• We claim "broken" for 4x profit

Variation:

"Meter running but fast":

• Actually it's tampered
• Runs 2-3x normal speed
• Rp100rb trip becomes Rp250rb

"Meter but expensive route":

• Take longer route (more traffic)
• Meter legit but trip 2x longer
• More money for us

Scam #5: "Include Everything" Tour yang Tidak Include Everything

Package Promise:

"Full Day Tour Rp900rb - All Include!"

Tourist thinks: Transport + entrance + lunch

Reality Check:

Include:

• Transport ✓
• "Some" entrance fees ✓

NOT include:

• Tirta Empul entrance: Rp15rb per person
• Tegallalang rice terrace: Rp20rb
• Monkey Forest: Rp80rb
• Tegenungan waterfall: Rp20rb
• Lunch: "Not included in package" - Rp300rb
• Sarong rental: Rp30rb
• Photo fee: Rp50rb
• "Donation" various: Rp100rb

Extra costs: Rp615rb for 2 people

Total: Rp1,515 juta (vs promised "all include Rp900rb")

Our Defense:

"All include means transport and main fees. Other fees separate."

Tourist never check detail.

Scam #6: Commission dari Restaurants

The System:

Every restaurant near tourist area has driver commission system.

Standard Rate:

20-30% dari bill.

Example:

Tourist bill: Rp800rb
My commission: Rp160-240rb

I bring 10 tourist per week: Rp1,6-2,4 juta weekly
Monthly: Rp6,4-9,6 juta JUST from restaurant kickback

How We Maximize:

• "You must try this place - best in Bali"
• "This is where I bring my family"
• "Trust me, I'm local"
• Push for drinks (higher bill)
• "Order the seafood" (most expensive)
• "You should try this dish too"

Higher bill = higher commission.

Scam #7: "Day Rate" yang Jadi "Door to Door"

The Setup:

Tourist book: "8 hours day tour - Rp700rb"

Start Clock Scam:

Tourist: "Pick up at 9am"
Driver: "Ok, I start calculate from my house to your hotel"

My house → Tourist hotel: 40 menit
8 hours start: 8:20am
8 hours end: 4:20pm

But I pick up at 9am.

So actually tourist get: 7 jam 20 menit
Or I charge: "Overtime Rp100rb/hour" × 2 hours = Rp200rb extra

Either way, we win.

Scam #8: Fuel Surcharge Palsu

Old Trick yang Masih Works:

During booking: "Rp600rb full day"

Day of: "Ah sorry, fuel price naik. Need add Rp100rb fuel surcharge ok?"

Reality:

• Fuel price tidak naik
• Even kalau naik, impact only Rp20rb
• We pocket Rp80rb extra

Tourist already there, terpaksa bayar.

The Uniform Scam:

Many drivers wear shirt with logo:

• "Bali Transport Official"
• "Airport Taxi Authorized"
• "Bali Tour Guide Association"

Reality:

None of these are official.

We just:

• Beli polo shirt Rp50rb
• Print logo sendiri Rp30rb
• Look "official"
• Tourist trust lebih

• Airport taxi counter (inside terminal)
• Grab/Gojek app

Scam #10: Last Day "Problem" Charges

The Strategy:

Be good driver Days 1-6.

Day 7 (Last Day Before Flight):

"Oh no, car problem!"

• "Need mechanic" - Rp300rb
• "Flat tire" - Rp200rb
• "Battery dead" - Rp250rb

Reality: Nothing wrong.

But tourist:

• Flight in few hours
• Panicked
• Just pay to solve problem

We pocket 100%.

5. Never Accept "Recommendations"

Driver push restaurant/shop/spa = commission.

Use Google Maps, TripAdvisor, local blogs.

6. Negotiate Full Price First

"Rp600rb include everything"

Clarify:

• All entrance fees?
• Lunch?
• Sarong rental?
• Parking?
• Toll?

Get it in writing (WhatsApp chat).

7. Pay at End

Never full payment upfront.

Pay after service delivered.

8. Check Meter Start

If taxi meter:

• Check starts from Rp7rb (not Rp50rb)
• Runs smooth (not too fast)
• Visible to you

9. Google Maps Route

Turn on navigation your phone.

If driver detour, question it.

Longer route = scam.

10. Bring Small Bills
